Multiple things can be true at the same time.

I was going to post an “Instagram vs. Reality” photo of the wedding we attended last weekend for my brother-in-law, and then I stopped myself. Both of these pictures are accurate of my life right now. We enjoyed celebrating our family, dancing, and dressing up. At the same time, holy cow, it is tricky to get a toddler to sit still for photos, understand the concept of over a hundred people dancing, and be out of his daily routine.

This reminds me of a concept I use with my clients, myself, and Jackson: two opposite things can be true simultaneously. We can capture the perfect moment of joy and everyone looking at the camera, and 3 seconds later, we can juggle a flying kid while trying to keep our outfits together.

In my experience with my clients and friends, we can feel anxious and excited simultaneously. Fear and joy, uncertainty and hope, anger and peace, ambition and exhaustion, all of these differing emotions can be genuine at the same time.

How might life be a bit easier if we allowed multiple things to coexist? Why does everything need to fit into one box? Life is messy and wonderful, picture-perfect and hectic, lovely and challenging. Embrace it all as valid and see how your life experience might expand.
